A Future That Still Looks Unfamiliar

The Future Remembered from Childhood

A few video clips on YouTube brought back a future I had encountered as a child. They featured the work of Luigi Colani: cars with extraordinary contours, trucks that seemed to lean into the air ahead of them, and aircraft whose bodies suggested creatures unfamiliar to ordinary aviation. I remembered seeing pictures like these in a science fiction magazine, possibly Starlog. The magazine’s identity has become uncertain, but the impression left by those machines has survived.

At the time, I thought some of the spacecraft might have come from NASA. Their presentation seemed to carry the authority of a technological world already preparing for things the rest of us could only imagine. Later, I came to associate them with an individual designer whose vision extended across many kinds of objects. What had appeared to be evidence of an institution’s future became evidence of one person’s capacity to imagine differently.

Looking at the designs again, I was struck by how little they had settled into the past. Many old pictures of the future now seem reassuring. Their rockets, domed cities, and polished interiors belong to an era whose hopes we recognize. Colani’s work does not always offer that reassurance. Even when its materials or presentation reveal its age, the object itself can still seem ahead of us, or somewhere beside the path we followed.

This experience draws attention to a difference between nostalgia and renewed curiosity. Nostalgia returns us to something we once knew. Curiosity begins when the familiar memory contains something we still cannot place. I recognized the excitement of those childhood pictures, but I also found questions that had not occurred to me then. Why should advanced technology look geometric? Why should a machine resemble an assembly of parts? Could an object become more technologically sophisticated while looking more like a living body?

The associations soon extended beyond spacecraft. Colani’s curves recalled Gaudí’s buildings, while their departure from conventional industrial forms raised questions about the Bauhaus. Apple products and Tesla vehicles entered the comparison, followed by the different futures imagined in science fiction films. An old image had become a way of looking at the present.

When a Machine Begins to Resemble a Body

Born in Berlin in 1928, Colani was a German designer whose work ranged from vehicles and aircraft to furniture, cameras, and household objects. The term most closely associated with his approach is biodesign. The Biodesign Foundation describes his commitment to natural forms as a continuing effort to bring human invention into a closer relationship with the living world. Nature supplied both inspiration and a challenge to established habits of making.

Calling his work rounded captures only its most immediate characteristic. A ball is rounded, as is the dome of a flying saucer, but neither necessarily looks alive. Colani’s forms often change character as the eye moves across them. A broad volume contracts into a narrow connection, then opens into another swelling surface. The transitions suggest movement, weight, tension, and bodily continuity. Something seems to have developed from something else.

An egg is useful to think with here. It is not a sphere with an arbitrary distortion added for interest. Its changing curvature belongs to a recognizable whole. A fish or a manta ray offers another kind of coherence, with a body that appears inseparable from the way it moves. When similar relationships appear in a vehicle, our perception shifts. We still understand that it has been manufactured, yet its shape invites us to imagine growth.

Colani’s interest also reached toward the body encountering the object. A camera must meet a hand and an eye; a chair must receive the weight and posture of a person. His discussion of ergonomics in a 2009 interview places these relationships at the centre of design. Here, the organic includes both the shape we see and the physical experience we have. An elegant surface becomes less convincing if it ignores the fingers expected to use it.

There is nevertheless a necessary distance between a persuasive form and a proven solution. A vehicle that resembles a fast marine animal does not acquire that animal’s efficiency through resemblance. Different environments impose different demands, and manufacturing adds constraints that nature does not share. Colani’s work occupies a fertile but unsettled space between functional inquiry and sculptural invention. Its power comes partly from making the possibilities of that space visible.

How a Revolution Becomes the Ordinary World

The regularity of industrial design provides a useful comparison. Rectangles fit together, repeated components simplify production, and standardized dimensions allow many objects to share the same environment. These advantages shape the world around us so thoroughly that their results can appear inevitable. A computer becomes a box, a building becomes a stack of floors, and a room becomes a collection of surfaces meeting at right angles.

The Bauhaus belongs to the history behind this environment, although its ambitions were broader than the style often attached to its name. Founded by Walter Gropius in 1919, it sought relationships among art, craft, and architecture, later placing greater emphasis on industrial production. The Bauhaus-Archiv traces this development through the school’s changing educational programme. Its geometry formed part of a larger attempt to reconsider how modern life could be made.

What now looks conventional once carried the force of an argument. Removing inherited ornament, using industrial materials, and organizing objects through clear relationships could challenge established ideas about beauty and social distinction. Over time, successful innovations entered offices, homes, factories, and schools. Their familiarity obscured the debates that had produced them. We began to see an ordinary chair where an earlier generation might have encountered a proposition about the future.

Colani’s own response to the Bauhaus was more discriminating than his exuberant forms might suggest. In a Design Museum interview, he objected to the reduction of its colours and range of shapes to a narrow world of squares, steel, and glass. He called this diminished inheritance “only 33% Bauhaus.” The criticism addressed what later practice had selected and repeated, leaving other possibilities behind.

His challenge allows us to separate rationality from any single appearance. A rectangular container can be rational for storage. A curved surface can be rational for movement through a fluid. A handle can require an irregular contour because hands are neither interchangeable blocks nor abstract diagrams. These purposes sometimes conflict. Design involves deciding which relationships deserve priority, then accepting responsibility for the compromises. Colani makes those decisions harder to conceal behind the claim that an established shape is the obvious one.

The Ancient Forms of an Unfamiliar World

Gaudí introduces a different encounter with forms that seem to exceed their surroundings. His buildings can appear bodily, geological, botanical, and fantastical within the same view. They suggest bones, branching growth, shells, and surfaces shaped over time. Yet they also belong to streets, neighbourhoods, and inherited practices. Their strangeness does not remove them from human history. It gives that history an unexpected physical presence.

Gaudí worked within Catalan Modernisme, closely related to the international currents of Art Nouveau. UNESCO’s account of his work recognizes both these cultural connections and the originality of his contribution. Art Nouveau itself should not be mistaken for a style that always looked traditional. Its organic lines once helped announce a departure from inherited conventions. Our tendency to read them as historical tells us something about the passage of time as well as the forms themselves.

The Sagrada Família brings several kinds of time together. Christian narratives and the purposes of worship connect it to a long religious inheritance. Its unfamiliar structures suggest possibilities that remain difficult to absorb into ordinary expectations of a church. Natural forms deepen the encounter because they are recognizable without belonging to a single historical period. A branching support can suggest a tree, a body, and an architectural invention simultaneously.

These associations coexist with rigorous geometry. The building’s complex surfaces and branching structures draw on mathematical organization and the distribution of forces. Its appearance of growth is supported by decisions about how stone and other materials can carry loads. The distinction between organic expression and rational construction becomes less secure when we look closely. Visual complexity may arise from a disciplined system whose order is not immediately apparent.

The construction history gives this relationship between inherited ambition and new capability a material dimension. Tourism has supplied substantial funding, while later generations have continued the work through changing techniques. The completion of the central Jesus Christ tower in 2026 marked a major achievement, although the basilica as a whole remained unfinished. A project transmitted across generations continues to take physical form in a changing world.

Gaudí and Colani should not be collapsed into a common style. Their purposes, materials, and cultural commitments differ. Their affinity lies in the way natural forms disturb an assumed boundary between the familiar and the alien. A creature from another world often becomes imaginable through rearrangements of life on this one. In their work, nature gives invention a vocabulary that can feel ancient without appearing exhausted.

The Different Futures We Learn to Recognize

Science fiction trains us to read objects as evidence of a larger world. A spacecraft tells us more than how its fictional occupants travel. Its surfaces, proportions, and visible components suggest what their civilization values, how it organizes work, and what it considers advanced. Before any explanation arrives, design has already begun to establish expectations.

The Enterprise in Star Trek offers a recognizable arrangement of distinct elements. Its saucer, connecting structures, and engine nacelles remain legible within the whole. The roundness is organized and articulated. The ship can suggest confidence in a technological order whose parts have different responsibilities. Its form invites us to imagine an institution operating it, complete with routines, expertise, and a stable sense of purpose.

Discovery in 2001: A Space Odyssey creates another impression. Its separated volumes and long connecting structure give it the appearance of equipment organized for a demanding mission. The eye encounters a relationship among components before encountering a unified sculptural body. The film’s monolith provides a striking counterpoint: an elementary form whose purpose remains inaccessible. Geometry can communicate either functional clarity or radical mystery, depending on its context.

Syd Mead’s imagined environments often extend technological credibility across an entire scene. Vehicles belong to roads, buildings, maintenance systems, and patterns of use. The future becomes persuasive through relationships among things. Colani expressed his admiration for Mead, a connection that makes their comparison especially rewarding. Admiration does not establish a particular chain of influence, but it reveals a shared interest in objects and worlds beyond present experience.

Colani’s distinctive contribution often begins within the object itself. Its volumes seem to belong to a continuous body, and that body suggests another way technology might develop. A machine can look as though it has a metabolism even when it is built from entirely conventional materials. This visual suggestion remains different from a claim that the object actually functions biologically. The imaginative effect comes from crossing categories that ordinary products keep separate.

Retrofuturism describes another dimension of the encounter. It concerns how an earlier imagined future appears from a later moment. Biomorphism concerns a language of form, so an old Colani concept can be both retrofuturist and biomorphic. Yet the first label can obscure the freshness of the experience. Some images invite us to enjoy a future safely enclosed in the past. Others return an unanswered possibility to the present. Colani’s work frequently retains that capacity to unsettle recognition.

When the Imagined Future Enters Production

Contemporary products bring these questions out of speculative images and into the hand, the workplace, and the street. Apple’s devices are useful examples because their familiarity can hide how deliberately their appearance has been constructed. A phone or laptop may look self-evident after years of use, even though its proportions, surfaces, controls, and methods of assembly embody many decisions that could have gone differently.

Jony Ive’s acknowledged connection to Dieter Rams offers a specific historical link between Apple’s design and an earlier industrial discipline. Clear organization and restraint belong to that inheritance. The finished object, however, also depends on tactile decisions: how an edge meets a palm, how a lid opens, and how separate surfaces are perceived as a coherent whole. Geometry becomes an experience through these details.

Manufacturing can serve the same ambition. Apple’s aluminium unibody MacBook connected the appearance of continuity to a new approach to constructing the enclosure. The earlier, colourful iMac G3 used a markedly different vocabulary of translucent plastic and rounded volume. Both demonstrate that a sustained design ambition need not produce one permanent shape. The problem being addressed, the available technology, and the desired relationship with the user can change.

Tesla’s vehicles raise a related question. Its sedans can retain something of a concept car’s presence even as manufactured objects on ordinary roads. Their flowing surfaces remain closer to familiar automotive design than to Colani’s anatomical inventions, but the reduction of visual clutter can strengthen their technological identity. A distinctive product does not have to look unprecedented in every detail. A coherent selection of familiar elements can alter the meaning of the whole.

The Cybertruck makes a more emphatic departure through its faceted silhouette and exposed metal. Its straight lines do not make it a Bauhaus object. Discussing its development, Franz von Holzhausen invoked Marcello Gandini, locating an aspiration within the tradition of dramatic automotive invention. Material decisions and the wish to challenge expectations worked together. The result presents a different emotional picture of technology from Tesla’s flowing passenger cars.

These differences need not amount to incompatible beliefs within a company. A sedan can make technological change appear accessible, while an angular truck can make departure itself the subject. Apple’s contrasting generations of computers demonstrate a comparable range. Historical movements become resources for contemporary practice, mixed with new materials, commercial purposes, and changing habits. They rarely survive as complete programmes transferred intact into a product line.

The distinction becomes clearer when appearance, operation, and human consequence are considered separately. Looking futuristic is one achievement. Working differently is another. Improving the conditions of everyday life requires further evidence. These achievements can reinforce one another, but none guarantees the others. The continued fascination of a concept car rests partly on the promise that they might converge, a promise that production and use eventually put to the test.

An Artist Who Continues to Ask Questions

After making these comparisons, I find myself wondering what Colani would say. Would an iPhone’s carefully resolved surface satisfy his concern for the hand? Would a Tesla sedan seem an advance or an unnecessarily cautious continuation of the familiar car? Would the Cybertruck’s refusal of convention interest him despite its angularity? The questions become engaging because his work has given us a recognizable position from which to ask them.

There are limits to this imagined conversation. Colani lived until 2019 and saw much of the technological world we now discuss, but a recorded judgment should never be replaced by an opinion invented on his behalf. His attention to ergonomics, natural forms, and energy use supplies a basis for inquiry. It does not authorize a verdict on every later object. Even a strong artistic philosophy can lead to responses that surprise those who think they understand it.

An artist’s continuing value can nevertheless take this conversational form. We encounter an unfamiliar building and think of Gaudí, or a carefully organized product and think of Rams. The association directs our attention toward features we might otherwise overlook. Colani makes us notice where a surface changes, how an object receives the body, and whether its familiar shape has been examined or inherited without question. His work enlarges the range of considerations available to perception.

This influence is harder to measure than sales, museum collections, or a documented borrowing. It may persist in someone who never designs a product. A child seeing a strange spacecraft in a magazine can acquire a lasting suspicion that the objects surrounding him represent only some of the possibilities. Decades later, that suspicion can return while watching a video, looking at a car, or holding a familiar device.

I no longer need the aircraft in that childhood memory to have belonged to NASA, and I cannot recover every detail of the page on which it appeared. The memory remains valuable because the image still gives me something to consider. Its body seems to carry an idea that has not been used up. Looking at it again, I can recognize the past while finding room for a future whose shape has not yet become ordinary.
