The intuition behind this suggestion is not frivolous. Something about generative AI feels different from previous technological advances. It unsettles people in ways that go beyond productivity, automation, or cost reduction. It touches language, judgment, creativity, and even the sense of what it means to think.
This intuition is largely correct. Generative AI represents a shift that is not merely technical but cognitive. Unlike earlier tools that automated physical labor or accelerated calculation, these systems participate in domains that humans once treated as markers of mental life. They write, summarize, argue, and explain. They generate plausible interpretations rather than executing fixed instructions. As a result, they do not simply change workflows. They reshape how knowledge work is perceived and practiced.
When a technology enters the space of meaning rather than motion, the questions it raises cannot remain technical for long. People begin to ask what understanding really is, what authorship means when text is co-produced, and what responsibility looks like when outcomes emerge probabilistically. The challenge, then, is not to hire philosophers, but to foster conditions in which philosophical awareness can take root. This awareness does not announce itself loudly. It appears as patience, humility, and attentiveness. It resists the temptation to treat intelligence as understanding, and capability as wisdom.
Generative AI has not made philosophy newly relevant. It has made our avoidance of philosophy impossible to sustain. The question now is not who should be hired, but who is willing to remain responsible when thinking itself is no longer confined to the human mind.
